My organic dislike for SM comes only from one thing: Ash Ketchum.
His shift in personality after XY is what bothers me. When you add in the drastically different art style, the dislike becomes amplified.
If SM kept everything same and just had replaced Ash with a new MC, I would've enjoyed the series a lot. I've seen a decent 60 episodes, and it's enjoyable.
But when Ash acts the way he does, that's what repels me.
Hell, if they just did a full reboot of Ash at the start of SM like M20, I would've been fine.
The hate comes from "This is the same guy that supposedly got toe-to-toe with Diantha, and the plot-armor-protected Alain. Yes, he's doing memefaces because the series allows him to."
SM in itself is pretty good. The school concept allows for a lot of recurring characters, which is always welcome in an anime with 100+ episodes. There's heavy episodes that balance the lighthearted ones, which is fantastic.
But in the end, It's just the fact that SM claims that SM Ash came after XY Ash that fucks up my brain and ability to properly watch and appreciate SM for what it offers.
If SM were the first Pokemon Anime I'd seen, then I know I would've loved it. But after going through OS, AG, DP, BW, and XY--- seeing Ash this way is just too frustrating to say the least.
