I imagine that they'd be respected, since they're (supposedly) very strong trainers and experts on their specific types, but only dedicated trainers would really benefit from them. They wouldn't mean very much to people who don't have Pokemon, people who have Pokemon but don't use them for battle, or people who use Pokemon for battle but aren't serious about getting competitive.
