Pokémon was way too big. Such an experience lived by a young and impressionable kid can't be explained into words. It was your addictive fantasy world breathing alive at every corner of the real life world, it appeared on the news, on school, on the supermarket, on the cereal and milk you drink every morning. Your friends knew about it, your distant cousins knew about it, the bullies at school knew about it, those poor third worlder kids knew about it, your church, teachers and everyone knew about it. It had no competition and the entire capitalist machine working to support it.
The social and technological state of the world in the late 90's was at the exact point to turn anything big into an unstoppable monster. And Pokémon took that place.
