Decided to try writing this one in character. I don't have any art of Alex from around that time, so have some art of him as a child, with one of his first Pokemon.
"Ten years? I would've still been in high school back then. That was a simpler time. I remember buying my first motorcycle. Used bike, but fast, and in pretty good shape. I got into street racing back then, made some friends, won a few races, got a few speeding tickets, good times. Of course, I didn't let that get in the way of my studies. I excelled in my classes, and eventually made it into one of the region's top universities. During those few years, I made rapid progress - I was on the cutting edge of genetics research, surrounded by the few people in the entire region, if not the world, who could match my genius. I spent day and night trying to prove my theory that we could alter a Pokemon - or a human's - DNA to enhance them beyond their natural limits. This was the next step in evolution, not just for our partners, but for mankind as a whole. But all of that theoretical work is meaningless without some practical way to apply it. I was so close to a breakthrough that could have revolutionized the field of genetic engineering. I was so close to that first step. But the methods I had available were... ugh. Less than ideal. I tried experimenting on my dear Golisopod, once. He knew the risks, and he was ready for it, but- I just couldn't bear to see the pain it caused him. I had to find another way. And so I turned my needle on myself. A willing test subject, able to endure any pain my experiments might bring. Unfortunately, this was my downfall.”
