You know, for a while I was okay with the competitive battle scene. I really enjoyed the complexity of the game, the variety of moves, pokemon, abilities, etc.
But I've been playing randoms on showdown for well over a month now and I am starting to see the bloat.
Argue all you want about it not being "true competitive" playing randoms or how I'm a Karenfag, but competitive really is cancer.
It's all about the same 20 Pokemon, minmaxing stats, setting up your entry hazards, killing the opponent's defogger, abusing terrain or weather or whatever... It isn't fun to me anymore. 3/4 of my battles the winner is determined by whoever set up the most hazards or stalled the best, and the last 1/4 all go down to hax.
Moves like Focus Blast and Stone Edge shouldn't miss as much as they do, or just straight up make the not exist.
Entry hazards are not clever. For a few battles they're a neat novelty, but after a while they just start feeling like "click to win."
Half the Megas aren't fucking viable at all.
Z-Moves are also a big waste of potential.
Status effects either don't have the right "punch" or they feel really unfair.
Moves like Scald are a cool concept, but should just be outright fucking removed from the game or nerfed.
There aren't nearly enough ways to deal with a smart Substitute user.
There are way too many moves that are "super buffs" now.
Every fucking Pokemon has Knock Off.
And I could keep going... but it's pointless.
I'm not saying Gen 1 was any better. It wasn't. It was terrible.
But I miss the time when where there wasn't crazy shit flying all over the field and Pokemon going super saiyan at the drop of a hat.
Maybe they should reboot with the Switch game, go back to basics. Squish all the stats closer together, drop some moves or items, rebalance shit...
The game fucking needs it. Badly.
