Simplest method is to just ask yourself what kind of content do you want to see more of in the world and create that. What is something you think is lacking in today's society? What old ideas have been forgotten or neglected, or what other ideas could be fused together to create something new?
Personally, the main inspiration behind my writing is getting experience with a genre I wasn't well-versed in before. I like heavy dialogue and slow plots, I didn't really do full-on action scenes before Eons in Flux and look at me now.
