They definitely did gen 1 justice and had a nice amount of new things and whatnot. My favorite thing about them was the UI - the way the menus worked, the look of the Dex feeling more like some sort of travel encyclopedia, the way using items/tms on a pokemon had a little animation - stuff like that.
On the other hand, it helped point out just how boring the gen 1 plot is, and how generic and over all plain Kanto is as a region.
It did what it did well, and it was better than gen 1 (as any remake should be better than its original, in theory), but it didn't really have much to work with.
