Objectively, XY's animations are better in the sense that they have more frames. In theory, they're more fluid. But they're so lifeless and stilted, unnatural. There's no OOMPH to them, and it's ESPECIALLY bad with their idle animations. In essence, while they're more animated, it's as if the Pokemon themselves are just phoning in their performance, and that's why they're so unliked.

And I'm not saying XY was the start of the franchise's decline, either. That was ORAS. XY had a lot of BW's design philosophies.
