There are a lot of way but I preferred choice would be introducing 8 new characters based on the original Digidestined from Digimon Adventure 02. They will witness something related to main legendary pokemon as a child on a summer camp that plays a major role in the story. Ash will be this "Dumb" kid from another region that they encounters in the series.
