Just beat Cheren by the skin of my teeth. Sewaddle had 3 HP and the other two were KO'd (I always play Set mode no items in battle, but man, Work Up is a monster move). I've intentionally never learned much about this game since I've been meaning to get around to it for about 11 years now, but I know the next Gym is Poison...not sure what my solution will be there.
I will say this game has a lot of backtracking so far, and I'm shocked that they give you RETURN after Gym 1. Not to mention access to LUCARIO before the 1st Gym?! Wow.
What Gym are you on? Slight spoiler but both Nidorans are available after Goldenrod if you want a non-Water Ground type. You're standing at 3 Water mons right now.
