It all started when Pokemon started.
Young me was interested in a lot of stuff; TMNT, Marvel, Kaiju movies, etc.
But then Pokemon came around, and I jumped on board a bit after the first season ended.
I watched reruns of the show all the time, hoping that I could one day get my own Gameboy and Pokemon game.
I didn't get a system until the GBA era, and for a while we couldn't afford TV.
I first saw Bulbasaur in "Bulbasaur: The Ambassador". Somehow I had missed Bulbasaur in the episodes I had seen before. Until then, I thought Ash only had Pikachu, Charizard, Pidgeotto and Squirtle.
Around the time I saw that episode, I got some first season VHS tapes. One of them included Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden.
Eventually I went back and saw Bulbasaurs' first appearance, and little autist me got angry that Pikachu could one-shot Bulbasaur even though type and stats say otherwise.
I guess Bulbasaur was the perfect role model for me. He was brave, he had strong willpower, and he was loyal. Compared to Mary Suechu, Asshole Charizard and Le Cool Turtle, Bulbasaur was the star of the group.
He grew on me immensely; his design was perfect to me. His moveset got me into grass types.
I advocated for Bulbasaur in a lot of starter debates, and it was here that I learned three things;
>Blastoise is more popular than Charizard within the fan base.
>Blastoise fans like to be hipsters and often shit on the other two starters more than the other two actually do.
>Bulbasaur had the least amount of recognition.
These made me realize that Charizard and Blastoise will always have the larger and more vocal fan bases. Not that Venusaur doesn't have a fanbase, but its very quiet and overshadowed.
Nowadays, I still love Bulbasaur. His design, his evolutionary family, all of it. I take the little victories: Venusaur getting a 9/10 Mega, Ivysaur in Brawl..
Though I would like to say, on behalf of all Venusaur fans, to all Char/Toise fans.
You are all bro as fuck
