I'm just going to play how I want to play. I used my hoarded stardust to get a bunch of my high IV favorite shitmons to 40 and started using them instead of the usual shit you see attacking and defending gyms.
Is it less efficient? In my case, yes. But I'm having fun, and that's all that matters to me.
That's the beauty of Pokemon. You can take a route 1 shitmon all the way to the Elite Four if you really want to, and in modern games they made that easier than ever. Some people might be complaining that they made the games "too easy", but that was specifically so that you can "use what you want". Little Jimmy can beat Lance, Wallace, Iris, and Leon with his level 100 Rattata if he wants.
It's the same thing in Pokemon Go because CP doesn't matter as much as you think it does (outside of PvP, anyway, but I don't care about that).
