I don't usually think of video game characters as extensions of myself.
Like, if I'm playing Adventures of Lolo I don't pretend I am a strange blue ball-shaped man who can shoot beams that encase monsters in eggs.
Instead, I view myself as a sort of guide that helps the character make decisions when they aren't sure what to do, or view us as partners that work together to solve problems as a team.
I usually like to play the girl character when I have the option because they tend to fire up my protective instincts more and the idea of being buddies with a cute/beautiful/hot girl is fun.
