Ash losing because he's down to a misbehaving Charizard works well, we saw that he didn't train for the league so having that be the reason he loses would make perfect sense
Oak pointed out in the Anime that Charizard not
being trained is why he lost but that just doesn't work when he had to fight tried and for the first and only time Sleep being a KO is now a thing
A simple luck and strength aren't enough moral and that you do have to out work in would be fine
