I'm 28 I grew up during peak pokemania. Saw the first movie on theaters and everything. It was great how literally everyone in my grade was playing it and watching the anime. We all had something to share and talk about which feels good as a kid. Like you have a connection to your peers. Everywhere I went I could shoot the shit and play Pokemon with a random strange child around my age.
I liked it personally because I loved animals and nature (camping, hiking, I lived near a beach) and I wanted to be a marine biologist as a kid so Pokemon represented basically the ultimate fantasy for me as a bit of a tree hugger child.
It was sad when pokemania died (which to me was around gen 3) but my younger cousin was a sinnoh fetus so i got to basically "show" him all the tricks and secrets and be a "Pokemon master" lol which was fun. Felt like I was passing down an oral tradition to a younger heir lol
