>>31497723I think Shuckle's basis is debated so much because it looks just weird enough that it's not obvious, but also mundane enough that people don't immediately just think it's an entirely original creature.
Personally I lean towards the idea of it being a scale insect. I could easily imagine someone at Game Freak seeing something like pic related and abstracting it into Shuckle.
