Pokémon battles are nowhere near as bad as actual animal fighting. It's more like boxing than anything else.
>Food is readily available in the wild. Berries are found almost everywhere. And they have to fight against other Pokemon for that food, which can be a life or death situation most if not all of the time.

They aren't "trapped" in a ball, since Pokemon CAN escape their balls if they so choose. See; Pikachu. And we don't even really know what the inside of a pokeball looks like, it could easily be a paradise in there.
