The thing is, skilled players like Smogon because it brings a level of balance and fair play to competitive Pokemon. Even when the whole Verlisify drama was going on, you'll notice that seasoned VGC vets jumped to defend Smogon because they know how competitive Pokemon works at a high level and understand Smogon's rationale.
The people who criticize Smogon tend to be people who understand EVs, IVs and the basics of competitive play, but are still focused on using Pokemon for random reasons instead of being able to properly build teams that can cover each other's weaknesses. You find that they rarely, if ever, play in actual Smogon formats and seem to think that because they beat a M-Gengar on Wifi randoms it's somehow not broken.
Against tourny or even top ladder players these guys would be demolished, especially if previously banned Pokemon were allowed since it's a fallacy that Smogon only bans what it can't beat. These Pokemon generally have much higher usage at the top of the ladder, and many people who actually voted to ban these things were people who used them and realized how easy it was to sweep/cripple the other team.
