Real in-game gym leaders use NFE pokemon (like Shuppet rather than Bannette) and single-stage pokemon with low BSTs (like Sableye).
The only unrealistic thing about this is the Rare Candies. That would never happen in a real game. They're not actually overpowered at all (honestly, what does a single level amount to?), but GF seems to hate letting people find/buy them in any large amounts (rather, not-scarce-as-hell amounts).
