Back in my day there were no subs. There were translations, sure, but if you wanted to know the entire dialogue, you'd watch the dub. As painful as that sounds, PM saved us by subbing around the 100 episode mark, but the thing about that was they were on and off, and sometimes they were on hiatuses. You just had to deal with it.
I hope you appreciate the fact that your generation of animefags get subs weekly and an annual update from one of the head translators.
