Every part of Gen 3 binary just short of ripping the engine out is extensively documented by going on 20 years of research. Even the cost of entry (ie installing a compiler and the necessary dependencies) is painful. The pret tutorial is miserable - other community tutorials like Lunos' "no-bullshit" style crash course are helpful but barely better.
I don't doubt that, in time, support for the Gen 3 decomps will be strong enough and documented enough for a brand new hacker to jump into it. But if I was trying to get my feet wet in ROM hacking and learn about the process/engine, and the current day Gen 3 decomps were what I was greeted with, I know I would have dropped it and I've seen it happen before.
