I started off with Yellow and gradually became more and more into the games, starting off not caring much for Yellow, beating Gold once or twice, playing the shit out of Sapphire/Emerald, and then becoming a fully fledged pokefag with Diamond
I don't know what you're envious about OP because the same sense of wonder came from Gold and Yellow as Sapphire and Diamond. Especially earlier on, when I was younger and didn't know about the limitations of vidya. I didn't give a shit about how old the series was, I was thinking about hidden shit and what the rest of the pokemon world was like (at that young of an age i thought there'd still be a world to adventure if i managed to get out of bounds)
You're not missing anything starting out now compared to getting in on the ground floor. Little kids are still going to have a sense of wonder about weird shit that we as adults won't think of. No, not even wifi is going to change much, i was in high school for B/W and kids were still trading in-person and making friends off of seeing each others pokewalkers and shit
