I stopped following the anime in the Orange Islands arc. It wasn't that I got bored of the show, it was just the way the show was handled on terrestrial television in the UK.
Whoever worked at ITV didn't give a shit about episode order. So the after-shool slot (CITV) was airing a set of episodes, the saturday morning slot (SMTV) was running episodes at a different point in the series and then the Sunday morning slot (Diggit?) was also cycling through at a different point of the show.
On top of that, each one of these runs would randomly jump back 20, 30 episodes or even reset back to episode 1. I got sick of tuning in expecting to finally see a new episode and find out they had decided to jump back again. I vaguely remember the Sunday slot eventually getting Johto episodes but I couldn't be bothered to get up that early and "Pokemania" was starting to die down at that point. I was still super into the games but without being able to gush over the franchise with my friends, watching the show felt pointless.
