I would still not expect it to win against a bear or a gorilla because that's retarded, it doesn't usually work like that neither it has the sheer strenght to take one like that.
I know it kinda sucks but somethings are just weaker; it's still possible to win if you know how to play your cards right though, but skill can only go so far on pokemon videogames because it's a turn-based strategy.
If you really want to win using weaker pokemon you'd have to get them in a double or triple battle with partners that could measure up to its weaknesses. That would be strategy.
If your opponent has a team of stronger pokemon that also hold out to each other's weaknesses, that's ALSO strategy; his strategy involved being stronger than you.
Skill and strenght are two things that need to be together to be able to do shit. In real life, if you are skilled enough, strenght is pointless and if you are strong enough skill is pointless, but in videogames you need to use both or you ARE going to get wrecked.
