Early Pokemon games had very few character arcs if any. They let the player discover the world at their own pace, and the human cast had very simple writing. Some people liked things this way. But Unova was a more linear game that put the human character arcs at the front, to polarizing reception.
Paldea has finally a winning formula, with open world progression and 3 optional stories that culminate in a cool finale. Giving something to people who want to explore, and people who want more out of the characters. It’s just too bad the actual game is glitchy, badly programmed and blatantly unfinished.
Maybe in Gen 10 they’ll finally get it right, haha
