Pokemon leaves a lot of blanks to fill in regarding both its setting and its characters which enables people to easily create their own version of the world that revolves around whatever they want. Everyone does this to some extent, usually without even being conscious that they're doing it, but schizos obviously tend to do it more often and to a more extreme extent, and any piece of media that makes it easier will naturally attract them. 2hu had the same sort of appeal back when that was popular and it attracted crazies like flies to garbage lole
