It is still extremely based on rewatch to realize that while Goh MIGHT have had a point here, he was really just talking about himself, rather than the Ivysaur. He went through his childhood with no close friends, his parents barely around, and only his personal interests and dreams to keep him moving forward, for years. Of COURSE he'd rather see Bulbasaur climb over the fence on its own, because he felt as though he had to metaphorically do the same; for Ash to suggest that Bulbasaur needed help was, from Goh's perspective, an insult to everything he'd gone through.
Genuinely the best anipoke character as far as I'm concerned. Not only was he funny and entertaining, he had a lot of flaws and baggage he had to contend with. It was nice to have an irrational, emotional character like him in an era where Ash had leveled out as a sort of Poke-Jesus figure
