I think with Pokemon like Hatterene, Tinkaton or Primarina they tried to go on a middle ground: they do come across as cute designs that would appeal the kawaii-addicted/female audience, but they also attempted to kill two birds with one stone and made them wink a little at the waifumon audience.
Personally, I like Pokemon like that that are a bit more balanced. Tsareena is blatantly a waifumon but ngl, her design is cool.
Meowscarada is embarrassing though, I just can't handle it. It being a starter makes the problem a lot worse.
For me especially because I'm tired of cat starter evos disappointing me.
