Most game protags are paired with their opposite gender counterpart, which G1 Ash doesn't have. So pairing him with a Leaf analog is a good fit.
That's why I'm so bitter about Satosere. I like her a lot, but Serena's development was so shit, possibly worse than Misty. The only claim she has to romance is the staff shilling, there is no on-screen chemistry.
