Yes, "salamander" as in the legendary creature, which, ironically, is more of a lizard. A crossover between a lizard and a fire elemental, which is apparent based on it's part fire typing and "lit" in its name. Has nothing to do with the amphibian besides its shape being similar to a lizard's.

Nice try, anti-genwunner, but Charmander is a fire type because it's based on the legend of the fire salamander. They didn't just go "hurr let's take a lizard and throw a flame on it," they thought of fitting mythology beforehand and based a Pokemon on it.
