I think it's less about the base games of SM being bad and more about so much of Pokemon being stale after so many years. The formula needs either a shakeup or a massive overhaul in terms of quality of life changes.

It was more acceptable in 3rd and 4th gen. 5th gen actually had decent secondary version since it was more of a sequel. It's 2017 now though and we're still dealing with a lot of the same shit. Even worse is Gamefreak's weird habit of adding features in one game and removing them the next. Following Pokemon lasted one game. Difficulty options lasted one game. How the fuck do we not have difficulty options at this point? They have vocalized concerns about retaining the older playerbase but they still ignore this. Blows my mind.
