Playing SMTV right now and it's basically for esoteric junkies and dungeon crawler fanatics. From a strictly gameplay point of view it is better than pokemon. But the pacing both story and progression is very sub-par compared to even Sword and Shield.
So while gameplay, production values and programming is better in SMTV. It's poor pacing will filter out 90% of normies and 60% of rpg fans including pokemon fans. Also the level spike in Ueno is borderline atrocious.
