Cyrus most likely knew about the legends and red chain stuff directly from records he inherited about the player's exploits.
Almost any noteworthy character from Sinnoh and some others have an ancestor character. Cynthia's ancestor tried to usurp Arceus and destroy the world with Giratina, Cyrus's was second in command of Galaxy Team, the professor's was in charge of Galaxy Team, etc.
