3 Extra Customization Options
1. Breeding
They don't show it in the game, because they can't do that many assets, but you should be able to get some variation that people will accept by mentioning selective breeding. As long as most of the stats are the same, you can probably get away with it in a single paragraph.
2. Dye
It's more obvious in birds and plants, but feeding your pets specific goods during the molting season can let you change their colors. Feeding a Farfetch'd red peppers can get you a red one, at least until the next molting time.
3. Dye
Either because the Trainer wants to add some highlights to their Riolu's fur because they think it looks nice or the Pokemon keeps getting into their makeup kit and messily applying it themselves, you can get some distance with this one. Showing how much the Pokemon trusts the Trainer to tart them up with all that equipment, or how a trip to the beauty salon can spiral into something that moves the story forward.
