People say Gen 5 was the last gen they truly tried, but I feel like XY was actually the last gen they tried. They just had to rush it too and GameFreak was too inexperienced with 3D to fulfill their initial vision.
Then ORAS came out of nowhere one day with a "trailer" that felt even more rushed than XY was. ORAS wasn't even due for a remake either, since the GBA games could still communicate with the DS games just fine. It was only due for a remake because of patternfags and Hoennbabbies and GameFreak saw the opportunity to make a quick buck while also fulfilling fan demand that has been around for half a decade.
And what we got was an inferior product by remake standards that feels like a quick cashgrab more than anything.
