A lot of her fans thought her timid on and off
personality was a character change. If you ask me, I think some of her initial fan base just took one glance at her GBA design and thought "Yeah, I'm guessing she's a skater" and projected their idea of who she was supposed to be.
That and overworld sprites being static and rarely expressive in Pokémon games with only walls of text to motion through leaves gaps for the imagination to fill in. So it's just as easily fans who played RSE inferred different of her character wit the combination of those two things.
