I saw one insane tweet earlier today saying something like "you only got into Pokemon that recently and you're calling the latest game in this 20 year long series, something that people like me have loved for all those years, shit?"
They couldn't separate negative views on one game from views of the series as a whole. Their relationship and history with the entire series is at stake over acknowledgement of anything negative.
Reminds me of the show Kitchen Nightmares where an owner could be in total agreement about some problem with their restaurant caused by a chef they don't even like, but the first 5 times Gordon brings it up they get super defensive because they identify with the restaurant overall and can't easily put down their defense mechanisms, even when help is right in front of them.
