The framing of the gym challenge as an actual sporting league following the progress of up-and-coming trainers was a great stylistic choice that gave the region a very tangible identity. It also really gave the gym battles a sense of grandeur; even something as trivial as fighting the first gym leader, which you've done at least a dozen times before in the previous games, suddely feels much more tense and exciting when there's a whole stadium chanting and cheering in the background.
