I think Gen 1 overall has better designs while 5 is more of a mixed bag.
If you compare some of them in an absolute vacuum, there are some absolute bangers that are hard to argue should be worse than their "Gen 1 counterpart". Zebstrika is really clever with the lightning stripes pattern. And who doesn't like Chandelure?
I'll admit to Gen 5 having quite a few "replace an old Pokémon"-counterparts, but to say everyone is, is a stretch. There are some great designs that isn't really a counterpart to anything. Galvantula is amazing (and mogs the Gen 2 spiders btw).
Picrel is obviously my subjective picks, but I dare you to say there isn't a single winner on the left side.
