I'm torn, though, whether it should be downplayed (maybe you see a gym leader on their downtime, and they say they're with their bf / gf), or if it should be highlighted (a gay romance is a fairly critical part of at least a portion of the game's story. Maybe you have to reunite two lovers or something).
I can honestly see the benefits to both approaches. The first just reinforces that love is just love, and that there's really nothing fundamentally different about a gay romance than there is about a straight one. The second approach makes the gay relationship very apparent, so if your end goal is to tell kids with budding homosexually that their feelings are okay (and, conversely, to convey to straight kids that being gay is okay), then that might be the better way to deal with it.
