I dunno guys. I've been through every gen and enjoyed it for what it was. Everyone has their opinions on which gen is the best and whatnot, but they all still felt authentically Pokemon. I've never played through any of the games and thought to myself, "This isn't Pokemon anymore" like most genwunners we all know and hate.
I liked everything about Gen 6 up to this point. When I read about Mega evolutions, it was THE first time I ever felt like Gamefreak was turning Pokemon into something it wasn't meant to be. Super saiyan? Honestly? It usually pisses me off when people compare the newer gens to Digimon for the design choices, but...unfortunately, I can't help but admit the entire concept of Mega evolving is uncomfortably Digimon-esque.
I admittedly like some of the Mega designs, particularly the new Ampharos and Absol. On one hand I'm glad some of the weaker mons are getting buffed - but did Gamefreak have to do it this way? Why not just give Mawile, you know...an actual evolution? On top of that, why do Blaziken, Lucario and FUCKING MEWTWO need to be even more OP? Why is this whole thing necessary?
On top of this, what if this focus on Megas results in a lack of actual new Pokemon to choose from? This is why Sinnoh was the least appealing game to me - too many babies/evos, not enough original lines.
I'm aware that most Pokemon aren't going to be Mega-fied. I realize it's optional. But really...in this case, it's the principle of the matter. Gamefreak could have buffed some Pokemon in various other ways - they didn't have to shove blatantly obvious Digimon/DBZ concepts in there. It's just...it doesn't feel like Pokemon. I'm sorry, but it doesn't.
I'm still going to buy the game, and I'm probably going to like the rest of it. But Mega evolving? I don't think I'll ever see it as more than unnecessary, uninspired, and unlike Pokemon at its core.
