I agree with everything but the statement that poison is a strong type. Generally you don't pick a Pokemon for its poison typing. The 3 main OU Poison types are Gengar, Tentacruel and Crobat.
Gengar has an impressive movepool, great speed and special attack and will mostly use Shadow Ball for STAB with Focus Blast for coverage, no poison attack. All the poison type adds is a weakness to psychic. Resistances don't matter much as it is very frail anyway and will get at least 2KO'd with any neutral hit.
Tentacruel also benefits mostly from its movepool. The only thing the poison typing gives it are toxic spikes and toxic. Not bad, but that's about it.
Crobat once again won't be using poison STABs most of the time. Its sets are usually a mix of Brave Bird, Roost, U-Turn, Taunt and Superfang. You could slap Cross Poison on it and now in Gen 6 that might be actually very viable.
To recap: If you think Gengar, you think Ghost, if you think Tentacruel, you think Water and if you think Crobat, you think Flying. Poison only adds a weakness to Psychic (and Ground for underused Poison types) and the occasional obscure move in the 4th slot.
