A more proper comparison would be Animal Crossing's amiibo and side content update. Lots of new features were added to the game with that, and even if you didn't use or even care about amiibos, there was still some new content that could interest you. In the past (the N64-GC era), Doubutsu no Mori would get updates that added content, and these updates would be their own games. With New Leaf, the update became a free addition to the game people already owned, while New Leaf +amiibo got shipped out for new players.
