>>17283232It's big faults as a stand alone game in the series was that it was short and easy. That doesn't mean it was bad objectively. It's just not what most of us are looking for.
You catch almost a dozen new pokemon a route. I like that myself, but it does make filling the pokedex far easier than before. I had over 100 different type of pokemon by the time I reached the second gym without trading. Going back to B/W, it was more like 16ish, I believe.
Adding to the short lifespan is how easy it is to level up now. Before X/Y, you split your experience among all participants whereas now everyone gets full exp plus any bonuses from pokemon amie, trade, items, or o-power. Even taking away the exp share, it's crazy fast to level a pokemon. Unless you're constantly rotating your team to fresh pokemon, you'll always be at least 10 levels above the gym you're fighting.
The battles themselves are more forgiving. I think Hawlucha is the closest pokemon to pre X/Y difficulty around. They don't hit that hard. I went back to B/W and was shocked to see how much harder battles were comparatively. Even with wild pokemon.
Then you had the story which was more opinions, but they really shot themselves in the foot after Gen V. A lot of the story lines seemed rushed or went nowhere. Team Flare was a really missed opportunity that could have been cool.
I don't see it as a failure, but it was definitely not what the average /vp/oreon was looking for in a pokemon game.
