Xy were pretty good. I never claimed to dislike them like some did so im not a flip flopper or nostalgia fagging. I'm not a zoomer I didnt play these games til I was in my early 20s. These games looked really nice. The environments and towns were well designed for the most part, and I know this is contentious, but I think the models were like 90% beautiful and breathed new life into mons, especially gen 5 mons. Seeing unovans in full 3d was almost shocking how much better they looked. Some models had weird proportions, or were washed out, or just kind of hovered midflight bit overall they looked great.
There are valid criticisms of course. The gym leaders are a tad bland and their teams needed some tweaking and to be more challenging, its easy to get overlevelled (with amie, the nushare, and catching pokemon now gives xp), theres not much to do post game, and the elite 4 while well designed and inhabiting gorgeous rooms, only had 4 pokemon each and no rematches. That sucks. Every game should have a decent chunk of post game (not just facilities, something where you get exp) ideally gym leader rematches with better full teams, then a final hurrah against the elite 4 where they have ultimate teams and held items etc. Lots of the locations throughout the region look nice but need more depth or fleshing out such as the power plant, and a few others. The thing that bothered me is that only 3 battles in the entire game have your opponent uses a mega evolution. They should have had the aforementioned gym leader/E4 rematches use them as well as some postgame content where at least a couple other trainers do too. To have only 3 battles where the opponent uses the gimmick of the gen is bad.
tl/dr though I stll really enjoyed these games they had some definite flaws.
I honestly think though a really polished Z version with zygarde given his form and fleshed out, along with the other changes I and others have listed, would be like top 5 pkmn games and maybe my favorites.
