As for Red, all he has going for him is levels. All things being equal, Cynthia made me far more uneasy than him.

2 & 3 are possibly interchangeable depending on the game and team makeup, same for 4 & 5. I found Lance harder for example as a dumber kid in Gen 2, but nowadays I'd find Iris's team slightly better. Rematch Lance vs Iris is debatable.
Cynthia tops always, and Wallace & Diantha are maybe interchangeable. I give it to Diantha for having access to a Mega, while Wallace is really just a beefed up version of his Gym Leader fight.
