For me, it's the ways in which you can interact with your pokemon: aside from just regular battles, I enjoy when you can use pokemon for other things like contests, pokeamie, following and interacting, pokelathon, etc. The more ways you can interact with your pokemon and the more things there are for you to do with your pokemon aside from the league arc. The more additional content outside the main story, the better. Even if the main plot is barebones or not that great, a pokemon game can be saved by its additional content.
