The amount of freedom the "gear project" gave developers sounded absolutely insane; hardly any game company is going to let any developer pitch an idea, much less actually move along with it if you can get a few more guys on board. Granted, I don't think any of their side games were anything good, but at least they tried.
It sounds like GF in general is just so damn tired of Pokemon, but nothing else they do works out, so they're forever shackled to it. The whole situation explains a ton about pretty much everything about the series within the past decade.
