The Johto season would have been better if Misty had been retired and was replaced by Casey. To avoid having two league competitors on the team Casey would have realized that battles are not her thing after continuous losses in the gyms (She is too passionate and loses focus) so giving her a pokesports focused arc would have been perfect, with her dream being to become a pro-player of the Electabuzz pokebasel team, her partner pokemon being Elekid who would grow up with her during her journey.
So in PJ she could have returned with an Electivire and as a rookie star of the Electabuzz.
