I also used wide pool of about 9 Pokemon, which meant I was always underleveled and had less options to work with. It was the first time I felt challenged by a Pokemon game in a long time. Bede actually swept me the second time I met him since I was so weakened by that point.
I realize this is self-inflicted, but that type of playstyle wasn't feasible until this game, and I admit I had fun.
